Global A Go-Go presents:

WRIR’s Spring 2018 Fund Drive is now underway — we’re working to raise $40,000 by Wednesday April 25 to power independent community radio in Richmond for another six months. Thank you for your previous donations to Richmond Independent Radio; I’m writing to encourage you to make a donation once again this spring.

You can make that donation in two minutes by clicking this link: http://wrir.org/donating. Or you can call or visit us between 9 AM and 9 PM during the drive, now through April 25. Our phone number is 804-622-9747; our address is 1621 W. Broad Street, 2nd floor.

Now in its 14th year, WRIR truly is “the tower of low power” — an example of the good that flows when the public regains control of its own airwaves. For too long, broadcasting has served the narrow private interests of the folks who own radio and TV licenses. Richmond Independent Radio and other low power FMs put the public interest first, where it belongs. The result is outstanding programming, deep community involvement and a true alternative to corporate media.

This project runs on people power. We don’t have deep-pocketed advertisers or donors — we have you instead. We need your participation, and we have it — about 150 of your neighbors work as volunteers on and off the air at WRIR. And we need your financial support as well — the overwhelming majority of Richmond Independent Radio’s $136,000 annual budget comes from folks like you …

… and from folks like me. Once again, I’m challenging the friends of Global A Go-Go to support WRIR. On Wednesday April 18 between 3 and 5 PM during my radio show, I’ll match your donation, dollar for dollar, up to $500. So double your donation by making it during Global A Go-Go.

If you tune in at that time, not only will you hear my money steadily being liberated from my wallet; you’ll also hear a most unusual and interesting program. April 18 is Zimbabwe’s independence day, and I’ll feature the music of Thomas Mapfumo, named the most important Zimbabwean of the 20th century by his countrymen. Joining me for the celebration will be Tim Harding of the bands Hotel X, Zgomot and New Loft, who knows Mapfumo’s music better than almost anyone — Tim has been a member of Thomas’ touring band. The photo at the top of the page is Thomas (white cap) and Tim (saxophone) on stage together in 2004.

To donate either now or on Wednesday between 3 and 5 PM, just click this link: http://wrir.org/donating. Or you can call or visit us any time between 9 AM and 9 PM during the drive, now through April 25. Our phone number is 804-622-9747; our address is 1621 W. Broad Street, 2nd floor.

Thank you so much for your support in the past, and I hope WRIR can count on you once again in Spring 2018. Long live Richmond Independent Radio!
