“The Fall of Bob Green" (ready by: Sally Holzgrefe)
On January 26, 2012, Bob Green, the former husband of pop singer and anti-gay activist Anita Bryant, was found dead in his Miami Beach home. He was 80.
In 1977, he and Bryant successfully led efforts to repeal Miami-Dade County’s newly passed gay rights ordinance, with Green working behind the scenes and Bryant rallying the public with lies.
Green managed both his wife’s singing and advertising gigs, with the most prominent commercial being for the Florida Citrus Commission. But Bryant’s anti-gay activism during her so-called “Save Our Children” campaign proved their downfall, prompting a boycott of Florida orange juice and ultimately the loss of most of their fortune.
A born again Christian, Bryant divorced Green in 1980, despite Biblical injunctions forbidding divorce.
