97.3 WRIR - Richmond Independent Radio

Jazz is "America's Classical Music" and New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz. Despite the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, NOLA remains a vibrant cultural epicenter, providing the world with a unique musical gumbo that continues to evolve and inspire. During this two-hour program we feature a spectrum of jazz from the Crescent City, focusing on classic performances from jazz greats ... tracks from contemporary artists ... and exciting new music including various jazz-related collaborations and projects. With its focus on jazz -- an urban music genre -- New Orleans Roots & More is a nice counterpoint to WRIR's Louisiana Dance Hall, which highlights Louisiana's various "country" music forms: Cajun, Creole, Zydeco and Swamp Pop.

While the cultural significance of jazz is undisputed, this music is not commercially viable on radio -- so, as part of our effort to fulfill WRIR's mission and broadcast underrepresented music, we highlight a wide range of jazz artists from the Crescent City ... and beyond. Much of this music comes from small, independent labels or self-released CDs from the artists. New Orleans Roots & More also features selected jazz tracks from new releases we've received at the station, by musicians who are not necessarily based in New Orleans but are still worth hearing.
