On Saturday morningsM, Buzzy Lawler hosted "Shake Some Action" on WRIR-FM. The show is a mighty dollop of 60's/70's music, presented by a guide who knows the tunes inside and out. He'll also play some tunes by artists he missed along the way, while he was too busy listening to something/someone else. A partial sampling of artists reads like this: roy Harper/Chris Farlowe/Small Faces/Kinks/Tim Buckley/Leonard Cohen/Flamin' Groovies/Beach boys/Beatles/Cheap Trick/Chuck Berry/Jerry Jeff Walker. Part of the fun for Buzzy is filling in the musical gaps, and making the "Shake Some Action" experience a learning one for him, and, with luck, for his listeners as well. It's a fairly free-form show most weeks, but occasionally he'll do a tribute to an artist or songwriting team, such as Leiber-Stoller. He'll do blues or R&B shows at times, and about once a year he'll host a "Tribute to Led Zeppelin without Playing any Led Zeppelin", wherein he will play tunes that can be directly, or even better, indirectly, related to, LZ, e.g., songs they stole licks or lyrics from, or songs Jimmy Page played guitar on, songs by The Yardbirds, etc. It's a quick 2 hours, and a fun ride.
