Otto just returned from a Sunday spent listening to the 78's belonging to a SW VA woman named Fannie Blackburn's 78 collection. Born in 1902, she saved up 17 cents for each Montgomery Ward brand 78, which apparently took some time.

Today’s edition of the Lost Music Saloon celebrates its own 9th birthday! It was on June 18, 2004 that the Lost Music Saloon first aired here on
WRIR. Back then it was a Friday evening show. We moved to Mondays when WRIR organized its “Roots Music Monday” line-up of programs.
It’s hard to believe that nine years have passed since that first show aired. Back then we were operating from a room about the size of a large
closet in the basement. When it rained, the floors puddled with water. The bathroom failed to work as often as not. Piles of CDs littered the floor
and any available horizontal space or table. And WRIR was only going out over the Internet back then - - no broadcasting over the air. There
were times you could count the entire listening audience on one hand.
For my 9th Anniversary, I’m doing my now-traditional re-creation of the very first Lost Music Saloon show (with just a tweak or two this year). I
trust that you won’t mind re-visiting these old friends with me.

I'll be joined this week by a special guest co-host. Vlad Cuiujuclu is one of my go-to sources for Balkan and Eastern European music. His listening lately has been veering in a jazzy, proggy direction, and he'll bring some of the stuff he's currently digging -- the Russian avant-rock band Auktyon, guitarist Enver Ismailov from Ukraine, and the folk-jazz Trigon ensemble from Vlad's birthplace, Moldova.
And of course I'll add a few items to the proceedings: Dieuf-Dieul De Thies from Senegal, Bombino from Niger, and Chris Vasi from right here in Richmond. Should be a fun show, you'll definitely hear something different on this one.
