Role in the Community

Virginia Center for Public Press, a 501(c)(3) Virginia corporation, operates WRIR-LP 97.3 FM, a community Low Power FM radio station serving citizens of the city of Richmond, Virginia, and surrounding counties. WRIR covers a listening area of approximately 200,000.
WRIR broadcasts news, views, and music that would otherwise be unrepresented on the public airwaves. The programming schedule covers seven days a week, 24 hours a day. News & talk programming is broadcast Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm, with the remainder of the broadcast week devoted to music programming. Since 2006, WRIR has also served as the official emergency broadcast outlet for the City of Richmond.
The station is staffed and operated by volunteers, ranging in age from 10 to 70 years old. All music programming is locally produced by volunteers. News and talk programming is a combination of locally produced & syndicated programs.
