Volunteer Opportunities

Best of Richmond

Welcome to WRIR's community of volunteers. We are almost 200 people strong, and our volunteers are as diverse as the station's programming. You will volunteer with people of many cultural, social and economic backgrounds from all over the Richmond area. What brings you together is a belief in true independent community radio. We know your time is valuable and hope you find volunteering at WRIR to be worthwhile.

Click the links on the left for more information on these volunteer opportunities and on how to start volunteering.

Volunteering with WRIR takes a blend of patience and persistence. Some volunteers are placed right away. Others take more time. Email the Volunteer Coordinator with your questions, inquiries or suggestions:

Including.... All-Nighter DJ, Weekday Board Operator, Events Team, Live Sound Engineer, Production, Marketing & Social Media and more!

WRIR knows how to do a lot with a little. Take our computers. When the station started volunteers found parts in dumpsters and managed to build up computer systems for the station. Now WRIR relies on these systems to upload and broadcast many of the stations national programs. If you like a challenge, and can improvise, and want to volunteer with creative, innovative people, then join us and help manage WRIR's IT functions.

SKILLS: (any of the following) podcasting, Gmail apps, database, web stream, computer systems, Linux, bash shell scripts, Apache, computer repairs, wiring and hardware

TRAINING: Existing volunteers are keen to mentor volunteers.

LOCATION: on-site or remote.

TIME: varies based on station needs or projects

CONTACT: or attend Operations meetings on the 1st Wednesday of the month at the station.

WRIR occupies a rented space which creaks and cracks as much as any. We need competent, enthusiastic construction volunteers. Regular maintenance work, repairing things the primadonna DJs break, decor and efficiency improvements all need doing. Working on a budget and with some creative imagination we'd love you to join the team and make the building beautiful.

SKILLS: (any of the following) painting, plumbing, carpentry.

TIME: varies based on station needs or projects, initially to implement remedial findings from an energy efficiency survey.

CONTACT: or attend Operations meetings on the 1st Wednesday of the month at the station.
