Global A Go-Go : Friday August 27, 5-7 PM
Posted by Bill Lupoletti on 2010/8/27 17:00:00 (2 reads)

Here in Richmond, we have three really interesting South Africa-themed art exhibitions in museums right now. Darkroom: Photography And New Media In South Africa Since 1950 opened at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts last week and opens at the Visual Arts Center Of Richmond Friday evening, and Imaging South Africa: Collection Projects Of Siemon Allen also opens Friday evening at Virginia Commonwealth University's Anderson Gallery. Here are links for all three venues:

With all this South African activity, I thought I'd pitch in with a set covering over 50 years of South African recording history, from Miriam Makeba (pictured above with the Manhattan Brothers) to the Tshetsha Boys (you gotta see this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyBVh48zS4I).

Also this week: a couple of sampler/samplee pairs, the early years of Franco & Le TPOK Jazz, and some wild Balkan tunes.

It's great to be back after a one-week absence; thanks to Albert Green for sitting in for me.

Well, I haven't played much reggae lately, so how about a set of the hard stuff? No pop, no style, just strictly roots, all from the 70s and 80s including a stone classic with Lee "Scratch" Perry (tanktop) at the controls, Max Romeo (white) behind the mic and the Upsetters (the rest of 'em) laying down the riddims.

And plenty more good stuff this week -- African singer-songwriters like Omar Pene and Nuru Kane, a great new band from Israel called The Apples, some electronic dance music from Africa and much more.

The Budos Band (pictured above) is without a doubt Staten Island's number one instrumental Afro-soul collective. Not much of an endorsement? How about this: they're one of the hottest, funkiest bands in the world today.

Their third album is in stores next week; you'll hear a track from it on today's edition of Global A Go-Go, plus one each from their first two discs. After that, you'll be prepared to write your own Budos Band hype.

Also on this week's program: soul music from the subcontinent, the funky 1970's in Ghana (including a preview of the new Analog Africa compilation, Afro-Beat Airways), and new desert blues by Tamikrest and Khaira Arby.

I'll start out this week's program with a tribute to Willem Breuker, the Dutch composer and bandleader (that's his ensemble, the Willem Breuker Kollektief, pictured above; Willem is fourth from the right in, you guessed it, the top row) who passed away on July 23.

Breuker's music is beyond category to be sure -- it encompasses the full scope of jazz history from New Orleans to free improvisation, the vernacular music of Breuker's native Amsterdam, more than a pinch of broad audio and visual humor, and so much more. If you'd like to know more about this absurdly under-appreciated artist, Kevin Whitehead's tribute on NPR's Fresh Air radio program is really worth a listen:

Also this week: salsa and mbalax from Senegal, the intoxicating sound of Kenyan benga, and one of those uniquely Global A Go-Go sets that finds a mere three degrees of separation between American semi-commercial rock and Bavarian brass band music.

Global A Go-Go : How to download or podcast Global A Go-Go

Global A Go-Go

Radio4all.net has made some improvements as of July 8, 2008. As a result, the instructions on how to download or podcast Global A Go-Go have changed slightly.

The new Radio4all has upgraded its servers and added a lot more bandwidth, so it should be faster and more reliable that it had been. That's good news for Global A Go-Go fans and for all friends of grassroots radio. More information about Radio4all's improvements is here:

http://www.radio4all.net/index.php/news/11

Now, here are the newly revised instructions:

If you'd like to see a list of the complete Global A Go-Go program archive, click here to go to the Programs From Series page:

http://www.radio4all.net/index.php/series/Global+A+Go-Go

If you want to download an individual program:
(1) Click on the program's address, either on this website or on the Programs From Series page at radio4all.net. This sends you to the Program Information page.
(2) At the bottom of the Program Information page, left-click on the red-and-white Downloads button.
(3) From there, just follow the instructions of your computer's operating system.

If you want to podcast Global A Go-Go (in other words, have the news of each new program delivered once it has been created, or have the recorded MP3 file itself delivered), simply click the PODCAST button at the top of the Programs From Series page.

Radio4all no longer supports streaming audio on its site, so you can't listen while you download. That feature hadn't worked well on their site for a very long time, so it's no great loss.

Global A Go-Go's archived programs are hosted by Radio4all at http://www.radio4all.net. Radio4all is a fantastic project that allows grassroots broadcasters to share programs with each other. If you use Radio4all to listen to Global A Go-Go, please consider making a donation to them. Radio4all is run by volunteers and is entirely funded by donations from the folks who use their bandwidth and services, like you and me.

Global A Go-Go's archives are the property and responsibility of Global A Go-Go and not of WRIR or Radio4all.

If you have any questions or problems regarding downloading or podcasting Global A Go-Go, feel free to drop me a line: globalagogoradio[at]gmail[dot]com.
