Global A Go-GoGlobal A Go-Go: Friday May 27, 5-7 PM

Great to be back after a week out of town.  Thanks to Sean from Slight Surface Noise Soundsystem for holding it down for me — I got to hear most of his show, and I thought it was superb.

You've probably already heard that May marks the 70th birthday of one of the most important musicians from the 1960's folk revival, a man whose music remains vital and current today.  It's Bob Dylan's 70th birthday as well.  But the man I'm talking about is Martin Carthy — British balladeer, virtuoso guitarist, member of seminal bands Steeleye Span, The Albion Country Band, Brass Monkey, The Watersons and The Imagined Village.  Today's show starts with a tribute to the career of Martin Carthy.

You'll also hear tracks from three new desert blues releases, by Vieux Farka Toure, Terakaft and Bombino.  And I'll play a selection from the record whose review is now the all-time most read post on my blog: Gozalo! Bugalu Tropical 4.

It’s the Least I Can Do : Celebrate the Return of Archers of Loaf presents:

Cause And EffectIt’s the Least I Can Do : Celebrate the Return of Archers of Loaf

Archers of Loaf bass player Matt Gentling help me create tonight's two hour radio show. Two hours of music celebrating the band's influences, back catalog, off-shoot bands, and peers from the Chapel Hill, NC music scene in the '90s.

Archers of Loaf broke up in 1998 and reading through interviews and talking to a few members, it was stressed for years that a reunion would probably never take place. With zero hopes raised, it was an incredible bit of good news to hear that in fact they would be playing a small handful of shows this year. AOL will be playing a sprinkle of dates Spring into Summer and with that news it seemed like the perfect time to put together a special Cause & Effect to celebrate. There will be a few more fun things happening around the Archers of Loaf this year but I am under strict orders to NOT share the news yet so you will just have to stay tuned for an update. I can tell you that it is GOOD news.

A huge thank you to Matt Gentling who was kind enough to host myself and my fella for a weekend  in lovely Asheville, NC (oh how the tables have turned) and offer up a list of bands and songs to play for tonight's show.

Long Weekend = Extra Tunes presents:

New Music MachineLong Weekend = Extra Tunes

I have two free MP3s for you this week from the astonishing Free Music Archive.

Italy's Dumbo Gets Mad combine a love for retro sounds with a 21st century approach to music for this fun track Plumy Tale from their album Elephants at the Door.

Garage meets Grunge meets British Riot Grrl?  Portlands The Whines combine that and more in a goulash of low-fi rock and psychedelia.  Their record Hell To Play (one of Ty Segal's favorites) came out last year, but they just made it to the Free Music Archive this month.  You can check it out this week on the show and download a copy yourself.

Also, join us for  Mars Classroom and Lifeguards – a couple of recent projects from Robert Pollard (of Guided by Voices) – as well as Ty Segal, White Denim, The Sea and Cake, David Bazan, Yourself And The Air, Skeletons, Trouble Books and a rare 70's folks reissue from These Trails.
