Activate! February 22 - February 29 presents:
Tonight at 7pm, I've got ticket giveaways, concert announcements, and good tuneage. First off, Don Harrison of Style Weekly and WRIR's own Mikemetic will join me in the studio to talk about the upcoming Shadrock Music Festival on April 28th, including the first band announcement and a chance to win tickets before they go on sale. Also, I have tickets to give away to the Black Girls (pictured) Record Release show. And of course tunes from bands playing live in RVA!

The Rainbow Minute presents:
Thursday, February 23 – "Captain Stephen Hill Takes Action" – Virginia State Delegate, Joe Morrissey
At a Republican debate in September of 2011, Captain Stephen Hill, a soldier serving in Iraq, asked the candidates their position on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He was booed by some homophobic audience members.
A few weeks later, it was announced that Captain Hill and his husband Joshua Snyder had joined other same-sex military couples in suing the federal government for the same benefits as other military couples. The plaintiffs, each legally married, want the military to recognize their families. They seek the same benefits for their same-sex spouses that the military provides for opposite-sex spouses.
The case, filed in Massachusetts, challenges the constitutionality of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and provisions in Title 10, Title 32, and Title 38 of the U.S. Code, which keep the U.S. military from providing equal benefits.

The Rainbow Minute presents:
Wednesday, February 22 – "Booed Soldier Brings Response From Obama" – Virginia State Delegate, Joe Morrissey
At a Republican debate on September 22, 2011, Captain Stephen Hill, a soldier serving in Iraq, asked the candidates their position on gays in the military. He was loudly booed by some people in the audience. Surprisingly, not one Republican presidential candidate reacted to the shocking display or thanked Hill for his service.
The event was viewed frequently all over the blogosphere, while political commentators jawed about it for days. At the annual Human Rights Campaign Dinner, President Barack Obama referred to the rude display, saying, “We don’t believe in the kind of smallness that says it’s okay for a stage full of political leaders – one of whom could end up being the president of the United States – being silent when an American soldier is booed. We don’t believe in that.”
More about Captain Hill tomorrow.
