"Barbara Grier Climbs ‘The Ladder"
Barbara Grier was a writer and collector of lesbian writings, and in 1957 subscribed to “The Ladder,” a lesbian magazine produced by the Daughters of Bilitis. She began writing book reviews for the magazine, using the pseudonym, “Gene Damon.” She soon expanded to writing articles and short stories, using the additional pseudonyms Gladys Casey, Lennox Strong and Vern Niven. From 1966 to 1968, Grier was “The Ladder’s” poetry and fiction editor.
In 1968, she took over the editorship from activist Barbara Gittings, intent on increasing its circulation and broadening its content. The magazine went from a 24-page publication to a 48-page format. Considered a lifeline to the lesbian community, it took on a more women’s liberation slant. Financially unsustainable, it ceased publication in 1972.
More about Grier, tomorrow.
