Kassav‘ (shown in the photo) got these zouk vibes started in Guadeloupe. They go all the way back to 1979. Read more about them here.
Douk Saga, father of coupé décalé music, claimed to have created this variant of zouglou in Ivory Coast. Coupé décalé was popularized in French nightclubs. Some Ivorians deny it originated in Ivory Coast because of the flamboyant, ostentatious behavior and money-throwing (think “Make it rain!”) which accompanied this type of club music.
