French Kiss presents:

My final Lost Music Saloon show is a difficult one for me to do. 20+ years is a long time to do a weekly radio show – – at 50 shows per year, that’s over 1000 2-hour shows, or somewhere around 2000 hours of music. It’s impossible to summarize that amount of time in just this last 2 hours of air time, but I’m going to try to bring you some of my fave songs over that 20 year span of time, while also recalling some of the many different types of music aired here in the Saloon. So tonight’s playlist will include mostly songs from 2004 – 2024. But I hope you’ll allow me to indulge myself with a lyric, and a song, of my own creation on the way out the Saloon doors.

I wrote the lyric for “The Lost Music Saloon” years ago and toyed with the idea of asking someone to set it to music and then using it as a theme song at the start of my show each week. But I never got around to getting it done. Seeing that this is my last show, I thought I’d at least leave that lyric behind as a reminder. But I’ll also close today’s final Lost Music Saloon playlist with another lyric (“Skeleton Keys”) that I also wrote years ago, but did have set to a simple guitar & vocal song.

Thanks For Listening, and “Thank You!” for your support of this show, and WRIR, over the years.

The Lost Music Saloon
(Garry Morse)

Hank arrives early, sits way in the back
Closes his eyes ‘neath an old cowboy hat
The new guys are tryin’ to craft fresh lines
With brand new rhythms beneath classic rhymes
The bar band plays loud all night long
While Johnny woos June with a soft love song
Then Townes takes a turn and sings his own tune
As the ghosts, and the memories, fill up the room.

The sign says ‘Welcome’
The doors open wide
It feels like home
When you step inside
Kick back and enjoy
An evening of tunes
Rediscover your smile…
Drink your favorite brew…
Sit and stay for a while…
In The Lost Music Saloon.

The boys in the band share the latest news
The old men at the bar share a shot or two
All talkin’ ’bout the new guy who arrived last night
Walked in by himself, said it just felt right
Dropped off at the arena by a black limousine
He knew right away that wasn’t his scene
So he walked across town by the light of the Moon
‘Til he found himself standing outside this Saloon.

The sign said ‘Welcome’
The doors opened wide
It felt like home
When he stepped inside
Kicked back and enjoyed
An evening of tunes
Rediscovered his smile…
Drank his favorite brew…
And he stayed for a while…
In the Lost Music Saloon.

Maybe in your town
You’ll find it soon
Perhaps heading outbound
By the light of the Moon
When your heart is hopin’
For good music & brew
Keep your ears wide open…
For the Lost Music Saloon.

The sign says ‘Welcome’
The doors open wide
It feels like home
When you step inside
Kick back and enjoy
An evening of tunes
Sit and stay for a while
Rediscover your smile
Tune your radio dial…
To the Lost Music Saloon…
The Lost Music Saloon…
Lost Music Saloon…..(fade to end)

From the First Lost Music Saloon Show (June 18, 2004):
Beginnings are important times, and I’ve given a fair amount of thought to choosing the songs to be played on the first edition of the Lost Music Saloon. The focus of the show – – alternative country, roots rock, country-rock, contemporary folk, etc – – is a somewhat fuzzy one. Not only is it difficult to draw bright lines around any of those types of music, it’s hard to even come up with definitions that are widely accepted. So I’ll let the music itself do the talking, and the show will define itself as the weeks go by.

For the Final Lost Music Saloon Show (October 7, 2024):
Well…endings are important times, too. I’ve let the music do the talking for 20+ years, and the Saloon has earned a home not only among WRIR’s listeners, but also among DIY artists & bands, promoters, small labels, and others who work to get good music out to listeners who might otherwise never hear it because of the way commercial radio stations are run. In 20+ years no one at WRIR has ever told me what songs to air on my show, and I wouldn’t DJ any other way. Thanks for listening, and please continue to support WRIR as it moves forward!
