Banji Kaicho presents:
And to complete my Shinji Aoyama tribute today after two years, I present another「映画ラジオ」special motivated from his central period. Desert Moon (2001) is a film steeped in the Kitakyushu sentiment, all in the shattered homes and finding paths to healing. The stunning cinematography provides a poignant lens on an advanced yet isolated 21st-century Japan.
Eli, Eli, Lema Sabachthani (2005) tells a very different story (but how much different?). Starring J-underground legend Masaya Nakahara, it depicts a virus-threatened apocalyptic world that feels eerily familiar. Noise music as the only mean to cure is hilarious yet haunting. Deafened. Despaired. Divine. Perhaps just my favorite music movie ever. My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?
