POP Goes The World! presents:

I was talking with a friend of mine the other day whom I’ve known since the 80s, and the song “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (and I feel fine)” by R.E.M. came on.

We started reminiscing about how coming of age in the 80s, in Washington D.C., at the height of the cold war, and being able to sing along to songs like that made us, at best, glib about the future, and at worse, downright fatalistic and nihilistic about it.

So for the last forty some odd years our generation has been expecting the end of the world (and feeling fine about it), and, to be sure, as “entertaining” as it’s been to have had this front row seat witnessing the decline of our civilization in real time, I can’t help but feel that this decline has jumped the shark, so to speak, and a part of me wishes it would just get it over with.

Anywhoo, here are some more pop songs to sing glibly along with!
