Ambiance Congo / The Other Black Music presents:
WELCOME!
Today we celebrate 80 years of life for the great singer, composer, arranger Sam Mangwana.
Sam was born on February 21, 1945 in Kinshasa to Angolan parents.
He started his career in his teens in the 1960s. We have a couple of his songs from the 1960s with Festival des Maquistards and Vox Africa among others. Sought after and independent, Sam joined African Fiesta of Tabu Ley in the early 1970s, working with Franco and T.P. O.K. Jazz also in those years.
In the late 1970s/early1980s, he formed L’African All Stars, the group for which he is arguably most famous and well known, He made many many records with different variations of his group during the 1980s.
One of these groups took up residence in Abidjan and produced a new genre of music, the roots of such later groups as 4 Etoiles and, one might say, of European style soukous as well.
He has contributed to albums by many other Congolese artists from Alain Makaba to Reddy Amisi and more.
He has with other African artists as well, such as Ghanaian singer Asabia Cropper and more.
He released his last album in 2016 and is still making music. Reddy Amisi’s last Album , Bailo Canto, was released in 2022 and features Sam on a couple of songs.
He has recorded so many wonderful songs that two hours here is nowhere near enough to honor his career.
