Human nature

Nusantara Beat is one of my favorite pre-debut-album bands of the moment. They’re from Amsterdam and all six members are Dutch Indonesian, either first, second or third generation.

Their music most definitely sounds Indonesian, with roots in both folk traditions and in Indonesia’s pop music of the last 50 years. At the same time, there’s no doubt that it’s made by young, hip Europeans who love global grooves, psych-rock and surf rock. Nusantara Beat has four singles out now, and you’ll hear the most recent one this week on Global A Go-Go.
