On Thursdays, January 12th, 19th, and 26th the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts presents the next installments in its Jazz Café series in the BEST café. In collaboration with The Richmond Jazz Society, the series features an eclectic mix of jazz ensembles every Thursday from 6 to 9 pm. The museum is open late until 9 pm every Thursday and Friday. Samson Trinh & the Mills Family Band, Lawrence Olds Quartet and the Butterbean Quartet are the featured jazz groups next in the line up. VMFA is located at 200 North Boulevard. The Redwing’s Nest, Sabot at Stony Point’s online journal of Art and Literature for children pre-school through 8th grade, is now accepting submissions for the next issue until March 1. The theme for this issue is HOME. If your child has written a poem, a memoir, a story or created a work of art about HOME then send in a submission. The Visual Arts Center of Richmond presents the next round of the Side by Side program for parents, grandparents, Big Brothers and Big Sisters to work with a young person, exploring new materials and creating projects together. January Side by Side Saturdays run January 14th, 21st and 28th. Doors open at 9:30 am, classes go from 10 am to noon. The rest of the winter and spring schedule for Side By Side is on the VisArts website. Pre-registration is not required. First come first serve on Saturday mornings. The Anderson Gallery of Virginia Commonwealth University presents an exhibition called “You, Your Sun and Shadow.” The exhibit opens on January 20th from 6 to 8 pm with a gallery talk with artist Michael Jones McKean on Wednesday, January 25 at 5:30 pm. The first Sunday of every month from 1 to 4 pm in the Art Education Center at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a program called “Open Studio Sundays.” This event is an open studio time where families are invited to make and take an art project inspired by a work from the museum’s collection. Check out the night sky with SKY WATCH at the Science Museum of Virginia every 3rd Friday of the month. Join members of the Richmond Astronomical Society on the museum's front lawn as they share their powerful telescopes for a look at the night sky. Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn are very bright this month. The next Sky watch is on January 20th at 7 pm. For more information contact the Science Museum at 864-1400. On January 26th at 6 pm The Science Museum presents a Healthy Living seminar on Exercise and Tai Chi. Join VCU Massey Cancer Center at the Science Museum of Virginia’s Discovery Room to learn from experts about ways patients, survivors and anyone else affected by cancer can improve their health and well-being.
