The Science Museum of Virginia’s astronomer, Justin Bartel, recently attended one at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Accomack County, VA and came by to tell us all about it. Tune in to learn about some of the unusual infrastructure around Wallops, the cargo on this particular launch, and what goes on at Wallops other than rocket launches. SIFTER for the Ear presents:

Betty Bodine was a radio character created by Rita Bentley. Her Southern accent and countrified manner made her popular for 20 years on Q94’s morning shows in Richmond. Her character’s bits were also syndicated in Norfolk, DC, Dallas, Mobile, Charleston, West Virginia, AND Charleston, South Carolina.
Now she’s written BODINE, THE EARLY YEARS OF RADIO’S BETTY BODINE, a fictional bio of her character’s teen years in Boones Mill, VA. We talk about:
– Betty Bodine’s origins
– Deciding to write a book
– How much of the novel is based on Rita’s life
– The biggest challenges in publishing it
– Getting started in radio
– Radio adventures
– What’s next?
