Banji Kaicho presents:

「千年/Sennen」 is a conceptual radio of 33 songs that seek the origins and future of those fleeting moments we call music. Blending classical, electronic, field recordings, and indigenous sounds, it journeys into a “fifth-world”realm—a space where music begets music, continually reshaping itself as it is transmitted, misunderstood, and reborn. No announcement, program or perhaps even archive will be left. Only memory. Airing today 1pm-3 on @wrir97.3fm and wrir.org 🖍️🪫

The Motherland Influence presents:

Inside the African Music Gallery in Washington DC. Not my photo.

WELCOME!

Today I’m finishing my miniseries featuring African LPs listened to and purchased in record boutiques and record stores form the 1970s to about the year 2000.

These are records that were on the shelves, records that, for the most part, were recommended by boutique proprietors and other patrons.

I’d go seeking Congolese music from the likes of Docteur Nico, Franco and others. The stores were chock full of Congolese albums. but provided opportunities  to be introduced to so much more.

It was a great time for African music with a huge variety musical styles and genres from across the continent.

I hope that you’ll enjoy these samples from the golden age.

Music from Zaire, Senegal, Guinea, Mali, South Africa, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Zambia and more.

Global A Go-Go presents:

I’ve been recapping my favorite singles and EPs of the year for each of the last six years. In the current era of home studios, direct-to-consumer distribution, mobile listening and streaming, the music industry has become more singles-focused than it’s been since before 1967. Singles aren’t just for Top 40 any more — whatever styles of music you like, if you’re ignoring singles you’re missing some of the best music being released today.

This year’s edition (Sunday December 22, 1:00-3:00 PM on WRIR, for two weeks afterwards at wrir.org/listen, check your local listings for airing on other radio stations, and any old time at my podcast site) once again has killer material, every bit as good as what you heard on my best albums of 2024 episode last week.

Without further ado, here are my favorite singles and EPs of 2024:
