Banji Kaicho presents:

Happy end of the year! It’s time for my favorite tradition of all—dedicating the final radio show of 2024 to Japanese Folk & Singer-Songwriter women. May their beautiful music bring comfort and warmth to your heart. Pray for a 万事快調 2025 🙏

Ambiance Congo / The Other Black Music presents:

Zaiko Langa-Langa in the ’70s and today. Not my photos.

ZAIKO LANGA-LANGA 55 YEARS!

Founded in December 1969 and still active today, Zaiko Langa-Langa is now the longest standing Congolese band.

Starting as the Congolese equivalent of a “garage band” alternative to OK Jazz, Afrisa InternationaL, Les Bantous and all of the other big name ’70s rumba combos, their lineups have included many artists who themselves became stars and household staples: Papa Wemba, Evoloko Joker, Dindo Yogo, Nyoka Longo, Mavuela Somo, Beniko Popolipo and many more.

Zaiko dropped the horn section and changed the rhythms and presentation of popular music. In the 1970s, their shows and recordings were directed at a more youthful audience. They dressed accordingly and added the strong atalaku animations that are still so fundamental to modern music. We can still hear their influence in the music of the families Wenge Musica, Viva la Mjusica and Quartier Latin and Extra Musica.

Today we’ll follow their recorded career from the early ’70s into the 21st century, starting with a song from their latest studio album of 2019. There is no possible way to play every one of my favorite Zaiko tracks in two hours – or even six hours – so we have a pared-down and curated selection that I hope that you’ll enjoy.

WELCOME!

Global A Go-Go presents:

This week on Global A Go-Go (Sunday December 29, 1:00-3:00 PM on WRIR, for two weeks afterwards at wrir.org/listen, check your local listings for airing on other radio stations, and any old time at my podcast site), I’m wrapping up a 3-week-long look at the top releases of 2024 by playing tracks from my favorite compilations, reissues and historic recordings of the year.

I admit to spending a lot of time keeping up with what’s new in the world of world music. At the same time, there’s so much older music that I’m still unaware of and that I’d like to know more about. How to work on both simultaneously? That’s precisely where compilations, reissues and historic recordings come in. I make sure to pay special attention to this category every year — it’s one of the primary ways I backfill my own musical knowledge.

Without further ado, here are my favorite compilations, reissues and historic recordings of 2024:
