Sit back, don’t relax, stay alert and vigilant because you never know what’s around the next corner! BOO!

This is a special first edition of Overdrive October since I didn’t finish recapping the new releases from August and September, I’ve gone in search of the heaviest most overdriven releases I can find from last month, bringing you to them tonight!

Aimée Lauren is not kidding when she says “shut up and dance.” Her signature sound is a driving beat that blends Detroit techno, NYC house, and West Coast acid into a groove designed to get you out of your head and onto the dance floor.

With all of her years behind the decks: making people dance  has always been priority number one. “It has never changed for me, I love to dance, it is critical to my well being. Before cell phones and the internet people danced. Period.

And that’s just it ; if you can’t expand your mind for the simplest bpm shift and hear the drum and the bass in the step of the dub; then musical dogma has you, what a shame.

Returning from Istanbul and Barcelona you can Catch her in RVA with her ButterCo brothers Elliott and Joey Burton on a boat with Anomalis Radio, and some very blessed very late nights with The Party Liberation Foundation , and sharing the decks at Loso formally known as the Jungle Room.

During Covid the Butter Co had the opportunity to live stream for RVA Magazine on their platform RadioRVA.

ELLIOTT & I developed and hosted the series we named CommonWealth. And it was such a great way to stay connected to people, at a time when human connection was under serious duress.

“I have always been bi-costal, migrating from NorCal to RVA/ NYC to CO”.

Her return to RVA in the early ‘90’s saw crews like Pure Love (Kevin & Tony Sparks) bringing the house sound to the empty warehouses in the bottom: and as kismet would have it; Aimee was immersed in the San Francisco house scene where the British crew known as Wicked and Clubs such as 1015 Folsom and The End Up delivered what became known as the west coast scene home base.

“We would drive almost anywhere to catch the young pioneers who were already legendary. It was amazing.”

It was like being a pioneer of your own pleasure. Often rushing home after work to map out (literally) the route to take to Detroit that weekend. Driving  to a warehouse with purposefully vague directions, post apocalyptic parking lots and walking towards the bass for a block or more, to a huge abandoned factory where Stacey Pullen or Rabbit in the Moon blew your mind, poorly lit, loud, amazing.

NYC brought her to the pivitol destination.

“I became a full on slave to the rhythm : Danny Tenaglia, Twilo, and the famous Phazon Sound System, the stars aligned, my true north.”

“I’ve always been competitive; so much of my industry is dominated by men/ actually all of this industry is/ I am just 1 woman of the maybe 2-3% of women who are still in it and we are all competing against men; it is very much just a mirror of life for women in many industries; you have to be willing to compete: at some point on some level it is just a fact: so it was only logical that I would level up and start producing”.

Which lead to the birth of New Lows Studios which will soon release the upcoming EP titled “Star Minor ; A tribute to Jesse Pruitt.”

His presence in the music community of Richmond was galvanizing; always pushing new sounds and fostering relationships across genres: he is always with me, Star Minor was initially just a way to be with him thru music, but it became a conversation that I truly believe he participated in, similar to michael Angelo’s David : Jesse was in the music, I just had to pull him out.

As Aimée says, ‘Having the freedom to dance is a gift. Embrace it. Music is a gift. Share it. Meet me on the dance floor. And please: shut up and dance.’
