Women & Politics presents:

It’s campaign season and we are checking in with candidates all over the state:

Rachel Levy

In 2021, I ran for the 55th District seat of the Virginia House of Delegates. We ran a great campaign and built for this one. I personally visited every precinct and my campaign knocked nearly 9500 doors. We raised the turnout from 2019 by almost 30 percent!

Post redistricting, I’m now in the 59th District and I’m running again! The 59th District includes most of Louisa County, the western half of Hanover County and the Town of Ashland, and parts of the Fairfield and Brookland Magisterial Districts in Henrico County. Rural, suburban (inner and outer ring), small and big towns–the 59th is a dynamic, diverse district that has it all. As a longtime resident of the Town of Ashland, I’m on the threshold between rural and suburban and well positioned to represent the district.

The daughter of two civil rights lawyers, I was brought up to be civically engaged and to be a contributor. My parents raised me to vote in every election and to use the advantages I have to help others. After graduating from college, I felt that sense of civic engagement when I decided to become a public school teacher. Eventually, I was driven to get my doctorate in educational leadership and policy at VCU. Preserving and improving public education became my life’s work. But I know, more than most, how legislative policies have real-life, real-time consequences on our educators, on our citizens, on our children, and on our families. I know what it is to be on the receiving end of the policies that are created.

Women & Politics presents:

It’s campaign season and we are checking in with candidates all over the state:

Makya Little

Makya Little is a mother, a former FBI and CIA officer, and an equity advocate. She is running to represent the new 19th District encompassing portions of Prince William and Fairfax Counties in Virginia’s House of Delegates. In 2019, Makya fought to reform how African American history is taught in Virginia as the Parent Advocate of Governor Northam’s Commission on African American History Education. As President of the TJ Alumni Action Group, she led the admissions reform advocacy efforts for the nation’s #1 high school—Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Most recently, as a Survivor of domestic violence, she authored House Bill 1351 (known as “Makya’s Law”) and advocated for the removal of the one-year waiting period that victims of domestic violence must wait to be granted a full divorce in Virginia. A certified Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practitioner who led the development of the CIA’s first Accessibility Strategy, Makya seeks to ensure a more inclusive future where shared prosperity is achieved collectively. Makya is a 26-year resident of Woodbridge, Virginia, a small business owner, and a coalition-builder who believes that partnerships and creative problem-solving are keys to our enhanced success.

Michele Joyce

Michele and her husband, Pete, married in Isle of Wight County, in 1999—at Benn’s United Methodist Church—in what is now the new 84th district. Isle of Wight is also where they raised their two daughters, Hailey and Julia. Michele graduated from William & Mary with a degree in Physics and has worked in Newport News at Jefferson Lab as a computer scientist since 1998 writing software for the lab’s particle accelerator. For the last 14 years, Michele has been a volunteer community leader and advocate—helping families in HD84 find affordable access to health care. Michele’s longtime community and professional experience in Hampton Roads speak to her abilities as a problem solver. She felt compelled to take an active role in helping her community after witnessing a neighborhood family fall victim to a flawed health-care system. She became a volunteer neighborhood team leader with the Obama campaign and organized for the passage of the Affordable Care Act. When the full law was implemented in 2014, she was trained to be a volunteer Health Care Navigator, traveling throughout the district, educating the public about the new law, and helping families find quality, affordable health care. In 2012, while Michele was serving as chair of the Isle of Wight County Democratic Committee, they were awarded “Committee of the Year” from the Democratic Party of Virginia. In 2019 Michele served as the Democratic nominee for Delegate from the former 64th House District (now HD84). In that election, Michele achieved record Democratic performance funded completely by small-dollar grassroots donors.

“Senator Favola is a whip in the Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus. She chairs the Virginia Senate’s Rehabilitation and Social Services Committee, as well as serving on the Local Government Committee, Transportation Committee, Rules Committee, and Agriculture, Conservation, and Natural Resources Committee. She is a member and former Chair of the Virginia Advisory Committee for Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, Chair of the Senate Women’s Health Care Caucus, and a member and former Chair of Virginia’s Commission on Youth.

Heidi Drauschak

Heidi Drauschak is a resident of Springfield, Virginia, an expectant mother, and a driven professional who holds a law degree and MBA from the University of Richmond, Virginia. Heidi had an early interest in state government, which led her to found CrowdLobby, an organization dedicated to giving everyday people access to lobbyists through crowdfunded campaigns. Her drive to make a positive impact in society has remained constant, and she believes that corporate interests are overrunning the government and more needs to be done to give ordinary people honest access to their legislators.

Heidi has helped found and run a non-partisan good governance organization focused on campaign finance reform, government transparency, and increased citizen engagement in Virginia. She now works with her husband in their own consultancy firm and spends her free time participating as an executive committee member at BigMoneyOutVA, advocating for campaign finance reform in Virginia.

After years of being told by legislators that these structural issues were not a priority, Heidi decided to take action and seek change from within the legislature itself. Heidi is thrilled to be seeking the Democratic nomination for Virginia’s newly redrawn 35th Senate District. She has a passion for promoting honest and transparent governance that represents the interests of everyday people. With her vast experience in public service, Heidi is poised to make a difference in Virginia’s state government and beyond.

Today we have on journalists from the VCU Capitol News

Gabriela de Camargo Gonçalves, Executive Editor @theCT  @vcucns

I was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil and moved to Columbus, Ohio in 2016. When it was time to choose where to go to college, I chose Virginia Commonwealth University for its arts program because of my love for painting and drawing. But I quickly realized I liked to be creative as an outlet, not a job. I turned to my other love: writing. I have always loved writing, and journalism came swinging. When it was 2020, and I was amid lockdowns and protests, I saw the value of journalism and how bad I wanted to a part of that world — be a vessel of words for the community I chose and make a real impact. I stuck with VCU because of the beautiful campus and in part to get away from the frigid Ohio winters. As soon as my college classes started, the passion grew even bigger with my digital/print journalism major and political science minor. I became wide eyed for the industry and yearning to be a part of it practically. I turned to the independent student-ran newspaper, The Commonwealth Times. A few semesters later, and lots of learning and growing, I am the managing editor of The CT with internships and making the most of my college experience.

Natalie Barr – journalist  @VCU reporter for @vcuinsight staff writer for @theCT

Hi, I am Natalie, a senior journalism student at Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to studying journalism, I graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising and worked in New York City for three years as a Stylist Assistant. I plan to work in the field of political journalism in Washington, D.C., upon graduation. Through my website, I will showcase articles I have written on health care and politics in the Richmond and Northern Virginia areas. As a reporter for Capital News Service, I covered Virginia’s 7 District Congressional Race for the 2022 midterms. Through CNS, I have been published in various outlets across Virginia. Check out the other articles I have written for Virginia Commonwealth University’s student newspaper, the Commonwealth Times.

Alix Bryan-Campos – Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University

Award-winning journalist and journalism educator with over 14 years working in publishing, who has a commitment to equitable community, focus on emerging technologies and a multiplatform nimbleness. Ability to listen, learn and report impactful news stories, as a journalist and educator. Mentors students to help them understand and achieve potential, as well as their place in a global community. I am happy to connect and see what we can accomplish together. Email [email protected] or send me a message here. You can view the work created through Capital News Service, a program I co-direct, at https://vcucns.com/

Women & Politics presents:

Senator Jennifer McClellan has dedicated her life to serving the people of Virginia and to ensuring that all Virginians have their voices heard in government. Sen. McClellan has served greater Richmond in the General Assembly for 17 years. She has earned a reputation as a strong legislative champion for Virginians, passing landmark laws to protect voting rights, safeguard abortion access, tackle climate change, rebuild crumbling schools, expand Obamacare in Virginia, protect workers rights, and reform Virginia’s criminal justice system.

Now, Senator McClellan is running for Congress to continue delivering for the people of Virginia, and to make sure their voices are heard in Washington, D.C. McClellan recognizes the tremendous legacy of Virginia’s 4th Congressional District, from Rep. John Mercer Langston to Rep. Donald McEachin. She is committed to continuing that legacy of service, and to breaking barriers as Virginia’s first Black woman member of Congress.

McClellan was elected to the House of Delegates representing Richmond in 2005. When the late Donald McEachin was elected to Congress in 2016, McClellan was elected to serve McEachin’s former Senate seat. She has served in the Senate since 2017, and serves as Vice Chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus. Sen. McClellan has also been a leader in addressing Virginia’s painful history of racial inequity. As Chair of the Virginia Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commission, Jenn promotes Dr. King’s legacy and continues his work, particularly racial healing, economic and social justice, and community engagement.

As a community leader at the local, state, and national level, McClellan has served on a wide variety of non-profit and civic organizations’ boards, including the YWCA of Richmond, the Virginia League of Planned Parenthood, the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, the Children’s Museum of Richmond, and the Robert Russa Moton Museum. She is also a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Sheba Williams, Executive Director of No Lef Turns, was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. She is the mother of 3 young adults. At the age of 10, Ms. Williams and her older sister awoke to an empty house. Her mother and father had been arrested the night before. Her mother was sentenced to 6 months in Henrico County Jail and her father was sent to Virginia’s Department of Corrections, with a sentence of 38 years. That was her first memory of the injustices of the penal  system in Virginia. As a child, her paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather  worked together to raise her and her sister. Though her mother only served a  short sentence in comparison to her father, she would never recover fully from having a felony conviction on her record. The state of Virginia was never designed to rehabilitate and allow for others to heal following a conviction.

In 2012, Ms. Williams moved back home, to Richmond, VA. Ms. Williams began working with people who were hurting because they were no longer considered “whole” citizens. Losing hundreds of inalienable rights was such a burden that she was inclined to advocate for those who had done their time but weren’t allowed to move beyond their convictions. It was always about the needs of others; it was never about her own situation. She made things work for her family with little to nothing, at times, but there were so many others surrounding her that didn’t have the support and resources available to navigate through life with a felony conviction in Virginia. Inspiration came from others who were surviving life after a conviction in Virginia. Inspiration came from others who didn’t know where to turn, but never gave up. Inspiration came from knowing that almost 95% of individuals who were convicted of a felony in Virginia must reintegrate into society as our neighbors, leaders, brothers and sisters. With 5 others, Nolef Turns Inc. was founded in 2016 as an all-volunteer group that advocates for people with felony convictions throughout Virginia.

Through all the trials and tribulations, Ms. Williams fights tirelessly for others. She knows that there is a need for crime and punishment, but she also knows that, at some point, it should be left in the past. In order to grow as a community, we must find forgiveness in those who make mistakes. Ms. Williams firmly believes in redemption and allowing others to have access to the tools they need to be able to become self-sufficient following a felony conviction. Employment is the key – whether it be corporate employment, self-employment or entrepreneurship. Being gainfully employed is the nucleus to housing, education, family structure, crime reduction, emotional stability, and so many other things and that is the core mission of Nolef Turns Inc.
