Today we bring Mallory Noe-Payne back to talk about reporters as first responders, the impact of white supremacy in the news, and the growing proliferation of gun violence.

Mallory Noe-Payne is Radio IQ’s Richmond reporter and bureau chief. She’s covered policy and politics from the state capital since 2016. She was a 2020-2021 recipient of the Fulbright Young Journalist Award. She spent a year in Munich, Germany researching memory, justice, and how a society can collectively confront its sins. Her Virginia-based coverage of home healthcare workers, voting rights, and Richmond’s Slave Trail have won national news awards. Mallory is a graduate of Virginia Tech with degrees in Journalism and Political Science. She is the creator of the podcast: Memory Wars, a five-part series about how Germany has confronted its horrific past and whether America could ever do the same. Ebony Walden is the Founder and Principal Consultant at Ebony Walden Consulting (EWC), an urban strategy firm based in Richmond, Virginia. At EWC, she works with a wide range of organizations to design and facilitate meetings, training, strategic plans and community engagement processes that explore race, equity and the creation of more just and inclusive communities. Before founding EWC, Ebony worked in local government and for non-profit organizations dedicated to citywide and neighborhood level revitalization. Currently, Ebony is an adjunct professor at Virginia Commonwealth University where she teaches Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the City. Ebony’s work has been featured in  The HillRichmond Times-Dispatch and The Nature of Cities. She holds a Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia and a Bachelors in Business Administration from Georgetown University. Inspired by The Just City Essays, Ebony Walden conceived the idea of an essay collection focused on Richmond (The Richmond Racial Equity Essays) in hopes of bringing together thought leadership and practice to advance racial equity in the region.

Dr. Shawnrell Blackwell is a Professional Curator for health and wellness and networking events. Her interactive sessions in the fields of education and mental health have impacted thousands for over 20 years. She is a change agent with a proven track record of success. Her clientele boasts immediate transformation during her powerful coaching sessions. Affectionately called the self-care guru, she advocates for equity and  accessibility of mental health services in BIPOC communities through her work as co-owner of Avail Outpatient Counseling. As founder of the Education Connection Academy (ECA) nonprofit, she has spearheaded many accomplished philanthropic projects, including creating healing spaces for hundreds of people each year. Dr. Blackwell specializes in nonpharmaceutical interventions such as mindfulness, movement, and medicinal herbs to heal the mind, body, and spirit. Through her gift of storytelling and dance, she has created an unparalleled connection with people around the world. The international motivational speaker received her Ph.D. from Virginia Tech University and M.Ed. and BA from Virginia State University where she studied communications, literature, and leadership. A true multi-hyphenate, she shares her offerings as a licensed mental health professional, grant writer, certified Reiki Master Teacher, and Fitness, CPR, and ESL Instructor.

Lauren Snellings, Research Director, Voices for Virginia’s Children

Lauren Snellings is the Research Director for Voices for Virginia’s Children. Lauren is responsible for providing data and research expertise that informs our policy work. She manages the Virginia KIDS COUNT data platform, supporting the Annie E. Casey Foundation KIDS COUNT efforts. She also leads our 2020 Census advocacy and education initiatives. She is an appointed Commissioner on the Virginia Complete Count Commission, serving as a trusted voice and resource to make sure everyone is counted in the 2020 Census, including our youngest children.

Lauren is an epidemiologist with a strong research background having most recently worked at the Center on Society and Health studying social determinants of health. Lauren earned her Masters in Public Health from Virginia Commonwealth University and graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health Education. In her free time she likes to do yoga and spend time outdoors. She is excited to use her skills and talent to further the data-informed advocacy at Voices.

Maya Walters is a Richmond transplant, arriving in August of 2010 to study at Virginia Commonwealth University, later graduating with a B.A. in History. She serves as a community liaison in the realms of education, recreation, culture, and the arts. She launched Silly Hearts LLC in the summer of 2022, her goal to provide accessible, informed, culture-minded care to families of the greater Richmond community.

Today we talk with women in local leadership about the community response to gun violence, the role of funeral services, and the intersection of domestic violence. Our guests today are:

Chenice Brown-Johnson, founder of Just C, is a native of Richmond, Va. She started Just C because she experienced what youth of today currently experience and understands the importance of having a trusted adult in their lives. Chenice uses real life triumphs to mentor young people by connecting, developing, and empowering them to heal and flourish. Aside from her passion for youth, Chenice has three sons and is the wife of a youth football coach. She is a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan and loves exploring new things with friends.

We then share a short NPR documentary on teens and gun violence.
