Hey everyone, Dr. Jay here. It’s a thrill to be able to join WRIR. I moved to Richmond from Rochester NY in August of 2023. I had a show on the local listener-supported station there – WBER (Shout out to The Only Station That Matters!)
I’ve always had a passion for music, and have always sought out something other than the mainstream. I remember being a 7 year old in the late 60s, calling my local AM station requesting In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.
My love for alternative music and for music history has combined into the Alternative Milestones show. Every week I highlight the people, the events, and the music that have milestone anniversaries (5,10,15,20 etc). Scientific studies have proven that music and memory are connected, and my show will hopefully bring back fond memories of where you were and what you were doing when the music was new.
With so many eras and genres included under the “alternative music” umbrella, I guarantee a great variety during each show. I have a blast researching these milestones and I’ll tell you about each one. And maybe you’ll hear something that’s new to you as well.
I also post every day’s milestones on my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/DrJayOnTheRadio. If you see a milestone and want to comment or request a specific tune, I love interacting with listeners to ensure they’re hearing something they care about.
I hope you’ll join me Thursdays from 1-3 PM.

Hi Jay, I would be loving it too. Getting to put all that You love, instead of Joey deciding what he loves. Enjoy it all. You never know what might happen down the road. We got back from Camppunksylania on a Monday afternoon and Izabella had a small stroke Tuesday Early AM. She is OK now and getting better. Hell, I probably cooked her in those three days of 95 degrees for all day concerts on three stages. Hey, going to Super Nova? We’ll be there and also the pre-Super Nova show and both after parties. Also stopping by The Toasters Gala at the American Theater in Hampton to Tim the $50 for support to Jamaican Music School but can’t stay cause of that nights show at the Vangard with Hans Gruber, PWRUP (friends with Justin, lead singer). Get out, cause you are much closer to DC and all the fun stuff. Enjoy, John
Hi Jay,
Hey John! It’s a lot more work but I’m loving doing my own 2-hour show every week.
Jay it’s John in CA. Congratulations on getting a show for alternative and all yours. If still in town today, Roger Cline is playing at 5PM in CA. Take a look. Hope to see you at Super Nova in September. Write to my e-mail and I’ll give you more info about more going on. Been active as heck with lots of friends and bands, since I am no longer supporting WBER. John
