Ambiance Congo / The Other Black Music presents:
Founded in December 1969 and still active today, Zaiko Langa-Langa is now the longest standing Congolese band.
Starting as the Congolese equivalent of a “garage band” alternative to OK Jazz, Afrisa InternationaL, Les Bantous and all of the other big name ’70s rumba combos, their lineups have included many artists who themselves became stars and household staples: Papa Wemba, Evoloko Joker, Dindo Yogo, Nyoka Longo, Mavuela Somo, Beniko Popolipo and many more.
Zaiko dropped the horn section and changed the rhythms and presentation of popular music. In the 1970s, their shows and recordings were directed at a more youthful audience. They dressed accordingly and added the strong atalaku animations that are still so fundamental to modern music. We can still hear their influence in the music of the families Wenge Musica, Viva la Mjusica and Quartier Latin and Extra Musica.
Today we’ll follow their recorded career from the early ’70s into the 21st century, starting with a song from their latest studio album of 2019. There is no possible way to play every one of my favorite Zaiko tracks in two hours – or even six hours – so we have a pared-down and curated selection that I hope that you’ll enjoy.

Today I’m finishing my miniseries featuring African LPs listened to and purchased in record boutiques and record stores form the 1970s to about the year 2000.
These are records that were on the shelves, records that, for the most part, were recommended by boutique proprietors and other patrons.
I’d go seeking Congolese music from the likes of Docteur Nico, Franco and others. The stores were chock full of Congolese albums. but provided opportunities to be introduced to so much more.
It was a great time for African music with a huge variety musical styles and genres from across the continent.
I hope that you’ll enjoy these samples from the golden age.
Music from Zaire, Senegal, Guinea, Mali, South Africa, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Zambia and more.

As we head to year’s end, I’ll play newer music from albums and singles that I’ve played during 2024.
I’ll also be featuring songs from some of the best recent reissue compilations and more.
Thank you for listening!

The Motherland Influence presents:
We live in age of digitized African music streamed impersonally and with little profit for the artists.
This is not always the case, though. Stores like Plan 9 and others here in Richmond still stock African records and CDs where the browsing and listening and purchasing experience is still available.
Back in the day, this was the rule rather than the exception. From African record boutiques in USA lIke the African Music Gallery and the African Record Center that specialized in all genres or specific genres of music to mega stores like Tower Records and independent music stores like Sterns, African LPs were readily available for browsing and making choice purchases. The choices in cities like Paris were far greater.
The variety of great music was astounding -with the vast majority of LPs in most stores being Congolese recordings -and choices for purchase were often difficult.
Today I’m starting a two part series, to be continued in two weeks, of LPs selected and purchased in stores in DC, Richmond, Paris, San Francisco and New York, mostly during the 1980s, the heyday of great pan-African music.
This episode, I’ll play songs from Cameroon, Gabon, Nigeria, Ghana, the Central African Republic, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Benin. You’ll hear some songs you may know and many that you may hear only on WRIR, including from rare LP by well known artists.
Next time we’ll sample records from Mali, Guinea, Congo, Senegal, South Africa and more.
Enjoy!
What are your favorites?

This first day of December brings some new music, some classics and more.
We may not get to all of the albums above, we may play more. Two hours is a long time when there’s not enough music planned, but it’s too short when I’ve planned for too much.
