Today I’m digging into mostly 1970’s-era Brazilian jazz, Tropicália, and MPB. I don’t remember exactly when I started listening to Brazilian music. I do remember obsessing over the movie Cidade De Deus and Brazilian graffiti early in college. Probably through collecting vinyl and researching the samples use by some of my favorite beatmakers I dug deeper into artists like Airto Moreira, Milton Nascimento and Arthur Verocai. I distinctly remember Milton’s “Clube da Esquina” being the soundtrack for my study abroad trip in Italy. I had that album on repeat for a while, so much so that my future spouse had to ask me to play something else. Later I found a few Brazilian music compilations, most notably Jazzanova’s “Paz E Futebol” and Soul Jazz Record’s “Brazil 70” that got me through my post-college years. It feels a bit cliche to focus on just this era of music when it comes to Brazil, as I’m sure it’s just scratching the surface of what the country has to offer. But it holds a special place in my heart. So I gathered some of my old favorites, some highlights, and some tracks new to me after digging through Discogs and Reddit over the past week or so. Pardon me if I mispronounce some names and I hope you enjoy!
