This week, we’ll have music recorded, mostly, after the year 2000.
If you like these more modern sounds, you can donate today and leave a comment with your donation to let me know.
If you like the classic rumba that made Congolese music the most popular and influential music in the diaspora, then you can donate next time (in two weeks) during the fund drive and leave a comment with your donation then.
Please remember:
WRIR is an all-volunteer organization. I can bring you this music only of you donate what you can to keep our equipment working, our lights on and all of the unique programs that we offer coming your way.
Please use that red button at top right of your screen to support Congolese music on the airwaves here in RVA and on the internet across the globe. Every little bit helps.
And here’s something to keep in mind: The Rumba Kings film is coming! The epic first documentary about Congolese rumba is near. Check it out here:

I will be playing a mix of Congolese music today, starting the first hour with music from the late 90s and more contemporary music.
We shall see where we go from there.
As it says on the inner sleeve of the CD shown above, PLAY IT LOUD!

WECOME!
Back in 2012, I devoted a program to one of my very favorite singers, the great Josky Kiambukuta Londa.
He passed away in Kinshasa last week and I’m celebrating his life and music again today.
You are invited to listen as we trace his career from “discovery” in the late 60s as he joined Docteur Nico’s African Fiesta Sukisa, his starting l’Orchestre Continental in the early 70s and then joining Franco’s T.P. O.K. Jazz in 1973. He contributed greatly to O.K. Jazz though the 1980s until Franco’s death in 1989. After Le Grand Maitre’s passing, Josky continued with other members of T.P. O.K. Jazz to make many more recordings.
Enjoy this music and share!
If you like what you hear today, you may listen to my 2012 tribute to Josky here:

For today’s program, we will revisit the program aired originally eleven years ago on January 17, 2010.
It’s a mixed program made up of different styles from different eras. Starting with a track from the rare and wonderful YA NONO album of Papa Noel, we’ll hear from Franco & T.P. O.K. Jazz, Reddy Amisi, Ferre Gola, Super Boboto de Brazzaville, Werrason and more.
This program is being aired remotely so we won’t be taking new requests.
I’d like to dedicate this rerun to my good friend Ronald in Rotterdam who passed a few years ago. I truly miss discussing music with him!
See you again in two weeks!
