Today I’m playing a selection of Australian jazz, funk, soul and dance music. The country’s been in the spotlight for the past few weeks and I wanted to redeem them in a way… Since Hiatus Kaiyote hit the scene I’ve been hooked at artists in that orbit. A lot of these tracks are Hiatus Kaiyote or 30/70 Collective adjacent. Some are by artists who may no longer live in Australia but grew up there, or grew up elsewhere and now call it home. Back in 2022 I released my first solo picture book Off The Wall, inspired by my love of street art and murals. I said long ago that it was Jet Set Radio in picture book form. To celebrate the release I made a small playlist of songs that I called an “unofficial” soundtrack.
This episode of EXT SRC will be an expansion of that playlist, featuring a selection of colorful instrumental hip-hop hearkening back to my high school and college days, plus some newer music that fits the bill.
