Deutscher Jam presents:

Hallo Leute sag mal wie geht’s? Habt ihr mich vermisst 😉

Alrighty guys today’s show revolves around the saying “Wir müssen reden” essentially we need to talk. Today’s show is going to give you the dual lenses you need trust me. Dual lenses auf der Hinsicht auf the past and present music flooding out of Germany showing exactly how music has redesigned what being German looks like today. Now touching base on the stereotypes – what do individuals typically think of when thinking of what a German looks like. I have heard everything they solely wear lederhosen, eat sausages, they have no sense of humor, drink beer, Nazi references, the language is aggressive or harsh, and are white. This could not be more wrong, being German is much more than that. Germany is located in the center of Europe, and like America is one huge melting pot of cultures. What has not been said by scholarly sources how much Germany has diversified since World War ll and more specific since 1989 moving into today. I called Hip-Hop the people’s language and also the peoples voice for it showcases a side of society of Germany you would not know existed. Struggle for identity is strong in Germany by definition what does it mean to be German?  Germans today have Italian, French, Dutch, polish, Austrian, Hungarian, and most prominent within the country African and Middle eastern descent. Those are the Germans fighting for the right to be called German and be seen as equal counterparts of society. A lot of artists such as Sammy Deluxe, Xavier Naidoo, Qwam. E, Ace Tee, Manuellsen, Bizzy Black, SAM and Eunique are the current voices of Afro-German artists pushing to showcase a different face of Germany. Then we have artists with middle eastern descent such as SSIO, Summer Cem, Capital Bra, Bushido, Ali As, and Remoe giving us a blended version of how diverse Germany is.In Germany, whose population is 82 million, you will notice more individuals of Middle Eastern, Asian, and African descent than many other countries in Europe. Major cities such as Heidelberg, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Koln, Hamburg, Bremen, Wiesbaden, Stuttgart, and Berlin are the hubs of diversity. Now this diversification of course sparks fear for some, just like in America. Yet through Hip-Hop, we see that Germany is on a continued track of becoming more diverse in its sense of fashion, language, and image of what being looks like. Single handedly, I have experienced not being seen or taken serious as being German until I speak the language, and I know that this is due to the pigment of my skin and my fluency to operate in two different cultures. It is a shame that groups that stems from different ethnicities have to fight to be seen as who they are because of naivetés, racism, and ignorance. But that is why I am pushing the statement that Germany is becoming a musical powerhouse through Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop in Germany would not be what is it today without these groups of people how have added to diversifying the German culture. “Wir sind mehr” – we are more than the picture painted of us and through Hip-Hop these voices are being heard as bold statements for social justice and identity.

Let us get back to the basics and focus on where it all started back in a time where Germany was still divided. This new genre of music was received and adopted differently between the two states political and cultural translation. Where the West “Federal Republic of Germany” was more liberal and integrated transatlantic flows of commodities, people, and images, the East “ German Democratic Republic” still clenched in the tight grip of the Soviet Union, only received glimpses of the global sounds coming through the Iron Curtain. Regardless of the state of the Republic in the mid-1980s, the Hip-Hop scene emerged through the youth culture. The cultural centers Spiel und Freiraume was a location in which the youth could meet and exchange ideas, socialize, and perform activities. These Spiel und Freiraume are the founding fathers of the creation of the first generation of the well know “Old School” Hip-Hop in both parts of Germany. The US-American armed forces stationed in West Germany were critical for introducing the new cultural form of Hip-Hop. The influx just as infusion of American troops stationed in Europe after World ll brought a wide range of music with them while stationed in Germany. The Americans combined with newly created German culture policies help in creating those state sanctioned cultural hubs for German youth that supported performance of musical arts in both the FRG and GDR. Troops that were stationed in some of the most metropolis cities such as Heidelberg, Frankfurt, and Berlin were a key instrument in the development of Hip-Hop in the West.

Guten Tag Richmond, I hope you’re enjoying what Deutscher Jam has to offer so far.

This show through myself should again give you a insider look into what the country really looks like! I chose to create Deutscher JAM to fully focus on Germany along with its language because it is a part of who I am, and I feel it is my duty to expand my love for the language in order to promote a more global society aka make it the German word: Multi-Kulti. .I was born and raised in Germany for 18 years – its culture, traditions, values, and way of society has shaped my view of the country and the world around it. That along with growing up in a multicultural household with an African American father and a German mother has gifted me with the ability to fluently live in two different worlds. This fluency gives me a great understanding on what the country truly has to offer and translate it to an English-speaking audience. The music in specific has always played an intricate role in my life in one hand growing up I listened to artists such as Jay-z, Salt & Pepper, Nelly, Eminem and Outkast. Then, on the other hand, I also listened to German artists such as Sido, Xavier Naidoo, Cro, SXTN, and Die Fantastischen Vier. I noticed that music was the key factor in my fluency of both languages.   There has been an ongoing movement through Hip-Hop of Germans attempting to reshape and rebrand the face of Germany in a more positive and open light. Germans have taken a genre introduced to them in 1989, reworked it into their own entity and used it as form of social justice, empowerment, diversification, and push for pride in national identity.

In Germany, through Hip-Hop, the youth created a movement called the “Jugendbewegung”. It is a movement of expressionism that help shape and change the way German society operates. German artists have reshaped what being German means and looks like. Since post World War ll Germans have struggled with national identity, and Hip-Hop has created a platform for Germans to ignite change and rebrand the face of their society. This current generation of Hip-Hop artists are reshaping everything about what being “Made in Germany” means and how they are actively embracing the language instead of shaming it .Germans have collaborated with artists from all over the world, including members from the Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean, and Philly artist Ivy Sole. While embracing the German language, artists have globalized the country through Hip-Hop placing them on the top of the charts steadily from 2000 until 2019. . While embracing the German language, artists have globalized the country through Hip-Hop placing them on the top of the charts steadily from 2000 until 2019. Germany is known to be the land of innovators and thinkers, along as producing nothing but high-quality products. Germany has reshaped themselves into not only a fierce competitor politically and economically but now also in the music industry. Allow me to reintroduce myself my name is Janell and I am the host of Deutscher Jam and I plan on becoming a cross-cultural bridge in connecting the music scene between Germany and the United States. Music has no language if it has a great sound, flow, rhythm the possibility to spread its energy is endless.I would like to give the German music industry and the language the recognition it deserves.I propose that having more influence from German Hip-Hop in the American music industry would open the door for Americans to have more interest in the German culture and its language. This would push our mindset to stray away one’s comfort zone and push towards a wider global mentality by exploring what another society has to offer at a global market. As always Viel Spaß heute mit meinem show “Deutscher Jam”!

„Deutschrap boomt seit Jahren.

Hallo Leute, servus und schönen Guten Tag Richmond to translate in a nutshell German Rap has been booming for years! Through this show I shall continue to give you a insider look into the different flavors Germany has to offer. In regards of the world of Hip-Hop it no longer is a dominating force solely in the United States instead it has become a widespread practice of handling unity and oppression across the globe. It is vital to know that Americans have played a huge role in the intricate creation of a blueprint that Germans have used to rework into their own version of what Hip-Hop is a German speaking society. Hip-Hop is the biggest youth culture movement that has ever happened, and Hip-Hop in Germany is bigger today than ever before. It is a movement that has been reworked for the past 40 years and developed into a multifaceted entity, and there are four major elements – DJ-ing, breakdancing, graffiti, and rap. Deutscher Jam is shifting the lens one may see through when imagining Germany’s music industry. Great importance revolves around the emergence and interpretation of the genre which should give you guys a blueprint of how it all began. This blueprint of Hip-Hop that early German artists have created has a allowed a new wave of Artists to rework an original sound into a dynamic force being spilled out all over the country.

Hallo Leute servus und Wilkommen zu unseren Deutscher Jam!Through Hip-Hop we get insight on how East and West Germany have taken a genre from across the Atlantic used it for social, political, and economic issues. In Germany, through Hip-Hop, the youth created a movement called the “Jugendbewegung”. It is a movement of expressionism that help shape and change the way German society operates.. German artists have reshaped what being German means and looks like. This current generation of Hip-Hop artists are reshaping everything about what being “Made in Germany” means and how they are actively embracing the language instead of shaming it. Through the music I found a close tie on issues being dealt with in between both the United States and Germany in regards to social, economic, and political issues. In Germany we call Volkswagen the people’s car, a vehicle meant to be a cheap, great quality, and any class of people could afford to be used as a statement. Whether one had a classic Beetle, toned Jetta, speedy Golf, or groovy Van everyone had a place in the eyes of Volkswagen. Hip-Hop like Volkswagen is a cheap, quality driven, entity that could be used as a statement from anyone regardless of background to have a bold voice in society. Hip-Hop, the people’s language has shown me growing up that through bold expression how to deal with social issues and embrace one’s differences.

Hallo Leute!

Todays show will continue to showcase the diversity coming out of Germany through their use of Hip-Hop. It is vital in recognizing that there has been an ongoing movement through Hip-Hop where Germans are attempting to reshape and rebrand the face of Germany in a more positive and open light. Germans have taken a genre introduced to them in 1989, reworked it into their own entity and used it as form of social justice, empowerment, diversification, and push for pride in national identity. My mission is to pull individuals away from viewing Germans as stereotypical picture of solely drinking beer, eating sausage, wearing lederhosen, and the population only consisting of one ethnicity. This insider look into a German speaking society is what I want to share with others. I want to show you guys here in Richmond along with the world that Germany is a force to be reckoned with, and that it is on a steady upward climb to becoming a new face of what Hip-Hop has to offer.
