WELCOME!

The Motherland Influence plays African, Latin & Caribbean music every week.

Today we’ll start by listening to music from Colombia and Cabo Verde then more from Colombia and Cabo Verde,

From accordions to horns, great vocals and deep basslines, complex percussion and guitars. From cumbia to funana – and a whole lot more – there’s a lot of commonality in the music we will play for you today.

You can kick back or kick up some dust.

Later in the program, we’ll spin off to Brazil, Angola, Haiti, Peru and more.

The Motherland Influence presents:

Sory Bamba 1938 – 2022

WELCOME!

African, Latin & Caribbean music.

We start off with a celebration of the late Sory Bamba: songwriter, trumpet player, flautist, leader of Kanaga de Mopti.

He made great music throughout the 70s in Mali.

Today’s first song is a tribute to Sory Bamba by the members of his band.

And then? More!

Let’s start with a classic from Guinea’s Sombory de Fria!

Do you love the music of Arsenio Rodriguez? Me too. We’ll have a track from him as well as salsa from Venezuela and a couple of rare songs from cassettes to celebrate Madagascar’s Independence Day.

Listen for another rarity: the late Congolese guitarist Nene Tshakou recorded with Nigerian artists in 1986.
