LJ hosts End of the Century! Says he:
I’ve now reached to 𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟔 in my slow-drip-of-tar-pitch-paced survey of the years covered by this show.
What was going on in ’96?
Well, let’s start with the obvious: Tupac, Tu-pac, 2pac.
He was riding high from his 1995 album, 𝘔𝘦 𝘈𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥. He went to prison, serving 8 months for sexual abuse charges. He released the hit follow up album, 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘌𝘺𝘦𝘻 𝘰𝘯 𝘔𝘦, in February of 1996. And, on September 13,1996, he died after being shot multiple times.
In 1996, we also see some notable band breakups:
• The Cocteau Twins release what would end up being their last album, 𝘔𝘪𝘭𝘬 & 𝘒𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴
• Swans disbanded after releasing their multi-hour opus, 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘥. They would be resurrected 14 years later.
• Siouxsie & The Banshees call it a day in April of 1996 with the following message:
“𝘈𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 “𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘺” 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘧 “𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘬”, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴, 𝘪𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺-𝘱𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵, 𝘚𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘹𝘴𝘪𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘣𝘺𝘦. 𝘛𝘰 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵. 𝘛𝘰 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘺𝘥𝘰𝘳 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 18 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴.
𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵… 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯 𝘔𝘤𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬, 𝘒𝘯𝘰𝘹 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘳, 𝘑𝘰𝘯 𝘒𝘭𝘦𝘪𝘯, 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘙𝘰𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘚𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘩, 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 𝘔𝘤𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘤𝘩, 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 𝘔𝘤𝘒𝘢𝘺, 𝘒𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘺 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘴, 𝘗𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘍𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘰𝘯, 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘰 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪 & 𝘚𝘪𝘥 𝘝𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴.”
There’s a LOT to cover in 1996!”
