Today Sheri and Carol talk with Mariam Alkazemi about how international journalism looks today and then with Sally Kane about how important local community radio is to communities.
Mariam F. Alkazemi is an assistant professor at the Robertson School of Media and Culture at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Previously, she served as a professor at Gulf University for Science and Technology, a Carnegie fellow at University of North Carolina and a research fellow at the London School of Economics. She has contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed publications on a range of topics. She recently co-edited a volume on the Arab diaspora, which was published by Lexington Books in June 2021. She has received a number of awards for her teaching and research, and she has received funding to support her research activities. She holds degrees from the University of Florida (2014, Ph.D.), Michigan State University (2009, M.A.) and George Washington University (2007, B.A.).
Sally Kane is a successful nonprofit executive with twenty years of experience in the field of community radio. She is a trained facilitator, accomplished fundraiser, and impassioned public speaker. As NFCB’s CEO Ms. Kane led the organization through a comprehensive restructure and built a team that moved the organization into a new chapter that includes impactful national advocacy, industry thought leadership, customized station services, and innovative initiatives that transform community media organizations.
